In less than an hour, you can take a ferry to Sapelo Island, enjoying the 2 miles of beaches and small-island life.  This state-protected island is home to only 47 residents, and it is a fun way to spend a day.  The Department of Natural Resources offers tours to show you the history and beauty of the island, including the remains of a sugar plantation and the mansion of the last private owner of the island.

Cumberland Island

In just about an hour in the other direction, spend the day on Cumberland Island.  Also accessible by ferry, this gem of an island boasts white sandy beaches and wild horses that roam the dunes.  Explore and find the ruins of Andrew Carnegie’s estate, built in the 1880’s, or immerse yourself in the history of the Indians who first lived on the island.

Darien, Georgia

To the South, visit the community of Darien, where the Altamaha Wildlife Management Area is a unique place to see all kinds of birds and living creatures.  Travel on to Fort King George, where the southern-most British post has been reconstructed, and a museum will walk you through the history of the Fort.  History buffs may also want to stop at the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation to witness a working rice plantation that thrived throughout the 1800’s.  Visitors will feel like they stepped back in time as they tour the plantation.
