St Simons Island Real Estate for Sale? Celebrate with Authentic Southern Food!

St Simons Island Fried ChickenSt. Simons Island is all about the lifestyle.

Many residents bought their St. Simons Island real estate for sale to use as a second or vacation home. Whether you buy an island home as a permanent residence or as a second home, food is an important part of your new home.

Fall is the time for local food and wine festivals, and none is more celebrated than St. Simons Island festivals. Food is an important statement of people’s culture, of their history and their creativity. Welcome to the lifestyle of the South!

Timeless Classics

People come from all over the world to experience Southern charm and hospitality. That’s not all they come for, though.

Two of the most celebrated dishes in the Southern way of life have become sought-after world-wide: barbecue and fried chicken.

Brunswick stew is next on the list. No one, but no one, does barbecue like St. Simons Island’s Southern Soul. Featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, Southern Soul is the kind of secret that was meant to get out. Their meats are smoked, the baked beans are barbecued and the sauces are incredible.

Locals love the daily specials, like crisp jerk chicken featuring pineapple, queso and black beans with pepper barbecue sauce, sour cream and fried jalapenos, which is called Marley Monday. The Brunswick stew at Southern Soul is all it should be.

The secret to the best fried chicken ever made is the temperature at which it is cooked. When meats are cooked on the lowest possible temperature and still cook it in a reasonable time, the meats turn out moist and succulent. We’re not sure if Barbara Jean’s cooks their fried chicken like that, but we do know it’s the best around, hands down.

The thing about Barbara Jean’s Southern style home cooking is that you need to come in starving to pieces. The servings are healthy-sized, pure down home cooked vegetable sides, cheese grits, homemade bread, garganuous “cups” of beverages and incredible desserts.

When you need a break from unpacking in your new St. Simons Island home, stroll over to Barbara Jean’s for timeless authentic Southern cooking.

Chef’s Choice

Most everyone loves a truly appreciative audience, and chefs are no exception. These guys have admirers lining the streets to get inside, and no wonder. For example, Dave Snyder, owner and chef of Halyard’s appreciates hearing his customers’ ideas for preparing his seafood dishes. He uses only the freshest of local foods to prepare his dishes. His Creamy Blue Crab Bisque walks out the door, so when you visit, be sure to ask for some or it may disappear!

Another lined-up-outside-the-door favorite is Chef John Belechak’s Palmer Village Café. For those days when you’ve unpacked and arranged your new home and could use a time-honored favorite, this is the place to be. You know you’re in the right place when a plate of spicy cheese omelet with fried onions and grits hits the spot. Seeking more general fare? Comfort yourself with a slammin’ chicken salad sandwich with ricotta cheese and red pepper.

It just is not Fall without a food festival. Oktoberfest is the most popular, but food festivals can happen at any time. The island uses the proceeds from its Food and Spirits Festival to benefit its favorite charity, Hospice of the Golden Isles. From September 30 to October 4, stroll along and partake of the fare on offer. From barbecue and beer at Southern Soul to the Friday Night Festival Feast with its five courses and wine dinner, you won’t have to buy groceries for at least a week! Farmer’s markets, oyster-fests, music, arts and tastings in all the village shops ensure the whole family sees and tastes something they love.

Food is also an excellent way of meeting new neighbors, making new friends and living the lifestyle of St. Simons Island for real estate buyers. We’d love to tell you more when you contact DeLoach Sotheby’s International Realty for more information.
