It is no secret that Coastal Georgia living has great appeal for many Americans. For some, that appeal includes the joys of participating in a low country boil.
With that said, we decided to switch gears this week and offer up some of our St. Simons’ Island real estate agent’s tips for throwing one heck of a seafood feast. Here they are:
Tip #1 – Keep the Food Menu Simple
Low country boils on St. Simons’ Island are traditionally casual affairs. So don’t over think the menu. Stick with the time-tested, Georgia classics like wild white shrimp, redskin potatoes, sausage and sweet corn. They are typically placed into the boiling pot. On some occasions, people will also whip up a batch of swamp cabbage. It’s often made with hearts of palm and bacon.
For beverages, serve up sweet tea with lemon wedges on the side. Oh and don’t forget to add a fresh peach cobbler or other tasty treat for desert.
Tip #2 – Visit the Local Markets
Once you have your menu down pat, be sure to visit the Golden Isles’ many markets. They are great places to pick up extremely fresh seafood, fruits and produce. Places to consider are Uncle Don’s Local Market in St. Simons and the City Market in nearby Brunswick. Of course depending on the time of year, you could also opt to hit the shoreline and harvest your own sweet Georgia shrimp. That’s just one of the many benefits of owning a piece of St. Simons’ Island real estate.
Tip #3 – Consider Calling in Reinforcements
Short on time and not sure how to make a classic low country boil or swamp cabbage? Don’t despair. You could always call in the local reinforcements. By local reinforcements, we mean one of the area’s restaurants. There are several on the island that offer ready-to-cook, low country boil takeout and catering specials. That way, all you have to worry about is starting and maintaining the fire.
