Golden Isles of Georgia – Shrimping Industry

Golden Isles of Georgia - Shrimping Industry The Golden Isles have the mainland port city of Brunswick and four spectacular barrier islands that are delightful places to call home: St. Simons Island, Sea Island, Jekyll Island, and Little St. Simons Island.

There is also a thriving shrimping industry in the Golden Isles, where Brunswick was once called “The Shrimp Capital of the World“. It is still the center for premium-quality Wild Georgia Shrimp that flourish in the local estuaries and marshes along the 100-mile-long Georgia coast of the Atlantic Ocean.

The delicious and sweet-tasting exceptional and abundant Wild Georgia Shrimp are wild-caught and are being promoted even more these days to customers who will be appreciative of their outstanding flavor.

An array of local shrimp boats await, in the midst of passenger cruise ships, at the dock in Brunswick to take their next trip to the prolific long stretches of offshore shrimping grounds. You can later see the shrimpers unloading at the docks along Bay Street, and then you can go and sample the catch at one of the fine restaurants.

Historic Brunswick is also the home of the original Brunswick Stew. The city’s history goes back to early Colonial times. It was named after Braunschweig, Germany, the ancestral home of King George II, the grantor of the state’s original land charter. The squares and streets were laid out before the American Revolution and have a definite English flavor to their names.

Back in 1789, George Washington named Brunswick as one of the five ports of entry for the 13 colonies. During World War II, Brunswick contained an important construction site for Liberty ships.

Consider taking a two-hour fishing trip in the protected waters of the St. Simon Sound on the LADY JANE, the only shrimp vessel located on the whole east coast that the United States Coast Guard has certified to carry 49 passengers. Lady Jane was painstakingly refurbished after retiring from years of service to the shrimping industry. There is a large covered deck with room to easily walk around, an air-conditioned cabin, and a restroom.
