The Literary Guild of St. Simons Island has some exciting news: They have recently opened a new book store. They are open two days a week, on Wednesdays from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The used book store is located at St. Simons Casino in Pier Village. No longer are fans of the guild’s biannual book sale forced to wait so long before finding some favorite used books.
One of the great advantages to buying real estate on St. Simons Island is that you have more than a vacation destination; you join a community. The Literary Guild describes itself on their website as “A strong community is created by collaborative attention to the arts, including literacy and cinematic media. The Literary Guild also provides financial support to local literacy initiatives.” In fact, all proceeds raised from their book store are donated to the Marshes of Glynn Libraries’ St. Simons Island location.
The Literary Guild has been a force for good in many other projects also. They have contributed to local school literacy programs, they have supported The Big Read, they have contributed money to the Reach Out and Read program, and so much more.
In addition to their bookstore and biannual book sales, the Literary Guild also hosts two other ongoing events: Coffee with the Author and the Island Film Series. Coffee with the Author is an ongoing event that brings in well known authors for discussions and book signings. For example, last month New York Times bestselling author Mary Kay Andrews talked about her latest book, The High Tide Club. And if you’re not a bibliophile, the film series is another educational opportunity for you.
If the Literary Guild sounds like a community you’d like to be a part of, you can also become a member. In addition to volunteer opportunities, membership includes free admission to the biannual book sales as well as all Coffee with the Author events.
