Day Trips from St. Simons Island – Part One

Day Trips from St. Simons IslandThere are many wonderful sights, living history, historic sites, attractions, entertainment, beaches, parks, wildlife, natural ecosystems, charter fishing, water sports, golfing, and unspoiled scenic beauty to see right on St. Simons Island and in many locations of the Golden Isles of Georgia on the Atlantic Ocean.

In fact, Travel and Leisure Magazine in 2014 voted St. Simons Island “America’s #1 Favorite Romantic Town” and “America’s #1 Favorite Beach Town”.

However, for those of you who would like to take occasional day trips a little further away, here are some suggestions. More appear in Part Two of this article.

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site

Located just north of Brunswick, this beautiful plantation offers a glimpse into the lives, history and culture of planters and slaves who grew rice in the marshes along the banks of the Altamaha River from the early 1800s until 1913. The fifth generation siblings started a dairy instead of selling the family home, but Ophelia, the last heir, left the plantation to the state of Georgia in 1973.

You are able to tour the antebellum home with its 18th and 19th century family heirloom furniture and Cantonese china, see a family collection in the museum, view a model of Hofwyl-Broadfield during its best days, see a film on the history, and see the nineteenth century farm equipment that still is being stored in the barn.

Jekyll Island

The island has retained much of its natural beauty as well as numerous outstanding activities such as 63 holes of golf, beaches, tennis, beaches, 20 miles of bike paths, mini-golf, tennis, nature tours, and the Summer Waves Water Park. Between Jekyll and the mainland, there are 234 holes of golf on 16 different courses.

The exclusive Jekyll Island Club with its “cottages” and support structures was an exclusive winter retreat for some of the wealthiest families in America and is now a National Historic Landmark that is owned by the State of Georgia and is open to the public.
